Tastes of long ago
I’ve been moping around the house here for the past couple of days feeling absolutely miserable with a nasty cold. I never knew that so much stuff could come out of ones nose. (See what I did there with the last two words of the last sentence?). Where does it all come from? Anyway that is besides the point.
As it happens I’m but one of three in the house struck down with this nastiness so I’m expecting disease control to call here sometime soon but I doubt that they need worry as none of us have left the house any time recently. Of course this has brought up a few problems.
We are rapidly running out of cigarettes and my mother refuses for some reason to reveal where her stash of Benson & Hedges duty free are hidden. And probably more important, we are also running out of food.
So it was because of the latter I found myself rummaging around the cupboards looking for something nice, preferably liquid and savoury. Something like a Hot Cup or Cup a Soup. And then that’s when I found it. Them actually as there are two of them.
Bovril!
“This will fill my needs.” I said to myself while also wondering what the differences between the two are. For those who don’t know, and I doubt there are many of you who don’t; Bovril is liquid cow. To be more exact it is a beef extract that you add boiling water to and end up with something akin to beef soup.
Or at least that is what I always thought. Turns out that since the “Mad Cow” scares a few years ago they stopped making it out of beef and instead made it out of yeast extract! So they effectively made it into Marmite which incidentially is made by the same company and tastes awful.
But apparently the beef is back. Boldly emblazoned on one of them is indeed the word Beef! while the other is quite plain. So that meant that I could satisfy my craving for something savoury and keep myself occupied for a while because I now intended to try the two to see if I could tell the difference.
Well believe me I could. There is a massive difference. The all yeast one is absolutely horrendous. The beef one (which is also part yeast) tasted a bit more? Well, more meaty and had a much nicer overall aftertaste. Then it dawned on me to check the expiry dates but they were in good order. Also as I left it 30 mins between each taste test I figured it would allow me to make a fair comparison.
So then I sat down to watch T.V. with my head filling up with nostalgia about shooting pheasants and ducks years ago with flasks of Bovril to sustain us through the hardy winters day…….. And then I realised I really need to get out more.
Imagine? The highlight of my day was comparing two bloody types of Bovril.
I hope that I’m well enough tomorrow that I can leave the house and go comparing pints of Guinness in various bars around town instead!
If you are after a few pints there is no way you can try with another bar… You would have to spend at least a year doing that… :]
I can’t wait for bread comparison ! That’s the challenge !
Beer is like liquid bread!
My comparisons of beer is an on going project. I’m currently on my 15th year and I still have some years left to go until my research is complete.
I ate a whole loaf of bread once. On holidays. After a load of beer. I wouldn’t recommend it.
They seem like a good combination but I think only in moderation!
