Count the birdies

Living by the sea in a once prospering fishing town means that there is still a lot of nautical folklore about. One of these is to do with seagulls. You could have seen them following the fishing boats back to harbour to land their catch. Sadly those days are over but of course there are still plenty of seagulls around.

Another bit of folklore is that when large numbers of seagulls or other sea birds gather inland then it is usually a sign of some exceptionally bad weather on the way. I hope that it is wrong if the photo I just took a few minutes ago is anything to go by. I took this out in my back garden and although it is almost directly into the sun, you can see something akin to a scene from a Hitchcock movie going on directly above our house. What do you call the day after five days of unbroken sunshine? Saturday!

    @Ruairi
    I heard different one: What’s the term used in Ireland that describes sunny day after two days of bucketing down? Monday ! :]

    Ha! Both of those are pretty good. I’m going to have to try to remember them.
