How to spend a Saturday, Or not!

Hope you are all enjoying the magnificent weather that we finally have. Of course now that the school holidays are over it was pretty much guaranteed that we would get some great weather. Having arrived back fron Norn Iron on Friday I though that I might get to enjoy some of it but one of the lads had other ideas. He needed some help sorting out a communications room at his place of work for once and for all and asked me would I be able to help.

I could hardly say no although when I saw the comms room in question I was beginning to have second doubts:

As you can see from above it is a bit of a mess! Actually that is an understatement. It was a complete mess. So we set about at 9am yesterday sorting and labeling cables and finally ripping everything out of the room until we ended up with this:

It took hours to get to the stage we were at in the above picture. I took that picture at 4pm. It took another 5 hours, but eventually we ended up ready to begin patching in the wiring. Or more correctly he was ready to begin patching in the wires.

So with 48 cables wired into the patch panel it was now 11:30pm and time to head back home as it was approaching closing time. There was still over 150 cables left to complete and he was going to do them himself today so my job was done :) This is what we were left with:

No wonder I don’t have a sun tan.

is that an IP phone in the 2nd pic?

It’s an IP phone alright. Can’t remember the exact model but it is a 3Com. If you look at the last picture. The very bottom of the cabinet with the switches?

The three from the bottom up are the 3Com PBX. The blue 1U is the PoE (Power over ethernet switch.) The shortish looking beige box is the ISDN PRI T/A. All the rest above it are ethernet switches.

In the picture with the IP phone, the box behind it is the old defunct PBX.

It reminds me old good times and the battle with the cables me & my friends had. I’m not suprised I have no sun tan too… :]

I hate cabling. And cabling hates me too. I almost always get some wires mixed up at some point!
