Is everything working ok?

I’ve been making some major changes to my setup here at home this weekend and I’m not sure if everything is working as it should be. I’m getting visitors as normal but I haven’t had a chance to check from another connection.

For my frequent visitors: Have you noticed things are slower or quicker? Are pages loading fully?

Now for what’s changed:

Webserver is still the same. Fedora 7 on a 3Ghz P4 with 1GB RAM. Database server hasn’t changed either still on a 3Ghz Xeon Upgraded MySQL to 5.0.45. What has changed is that all my http requests are now being handled by a reverse proxy which is a 500Mhz PIII. Everything should be running in its memory with no disk access so things shouldn’t be any slower.  All requests for this domain (sweetnam.eu) are being handled by one server. Another domain that I can’t mention yet is running IIS on Windows. A third is running on another Linux machine. Fedora again on another 3Ghz P4 with 2GB of RAM.

I know this is serious overkill considering the speed of my upload but that has to be the way it is for the moment! Here is a lovely diagram: And yes! That is really what is dishing out this very page to you. And that’s just my DMZ. I really need to get a life! And possibly some air-conditioning.

And to think, all my sites are sitting on two small little VPSes in some datacenter in the US.

Nice setup, although you’ll need failover on the db server!

    Hi Robert,

All seems fine and nice and response from a Netsource DSL link anyhow. Nice setup BTW

    Only one question Robert!

Where will you put the Baby? Or will you have time to play when the Baby comes?

Cheers Donncha, Good point about the DB server.

Thanks AJ, I still have the HP9000 but it is only turned on occassionally because of the noise!

Grannymar that’s a good point. Of course when baby comes he or she will be the number one priority so it’s important that I get my setup here right!

It does seem slightly faster. though that could be a pigment of my imagination.

does having all those servers on mean you don’t have to bother with central heating or any of that?

Dan – It might seem a little faster because the reverse proxy is caching requests too.

It gets nice and warm in here and saves having to run a heater in here alright. Those are just the web related servers. There is one file server, two workstations and my MacBook running here as well!

Electricity isn’t too bad either. The room here is on its own circuit. I only use one LCD and occassionally one monnitor. Works out about €2 – €3 per day.

Why do you need IIS? Let me see… Integration with Lotus? :]
What about changing some hardware to virtual machines? You could save some money on electricity…

    Welcome back!

The setup above only survived for a few weeks. I decided to move my site and DB over on to my Dell Poweredge 2800 since I don’t have as much free time at the moment :)

I was using IIS for a site that I was hosting temporarily but it has since been moved on to a colocated server.
