Eircom to promise faster broadband speeds

I should probably post this on my tech blog but nonetheless:

Eircom have announced today that they plan to roll out speed increases on all their broadband products with some lucky punters being upgraded to 12Mb.

Mine is currently 4Mb so I wonder how much of an increase I will get?

Mulley has more details – looks like we will have to wait until March to April.

That would be nice. I wonder will BT increase their speed? The article says that wholesale customers get the same deal but don’t BT have their own network?

Mine’s a measly 2MB line (Oh how I’d have loved to have said that in the old modem days!)

Dan – Looks like you will have 7.6Mb and I will have 10Mb – Happy days. I wonder what the upload speed will be? 1Mb would be nice. 2Mb even better :)

Donncha – I know that feeling. I remember when it was first available here in Youghal that I was over the moon with just 512k! Regarding BT, I know they have been advertising heavily that they have begun upgrading their exchanges. Douglas is the only one in Cork now supporting 8Mb I think.

I’m also just checking to be sure that my router supports the higher speeds. AFAIK it supports only up to 8Mb

Noice.. So does the netopia router support it?

My draytek doesn’t :( It only supports up to 8Mb.

looks like we all need new modems as the Netopias (3300 and 3347 series) only support up to 8Mb also.

It would be great if they could honour the speeds they have never mind doubling them, I got the eircom 7.2 meg line on a 24.1 contention ratio, I live about 1.5 km from the exchange and cant get speeds above 200kbps . Lastnight my top speed was, wait for it 4kbps I wasn’t even bearly getting a connection.
Has anyone else had this problem ?

    Hi Chris,

I haven’t had any problems with my upgrade. Mine is business broadband though so I’m not sure about my contention ratio but I regularly download files such as a Linux ISO image and I get about 760kbps.

4kbps is really taking the piss though so it might be worth getting on to eircom about it to see if anything is wrong with your line.

If you have a netopia router, open its home page and have a look at the line attenuation reading. If is os over 50 then definitely get in touch with Eircom or unplug any phone extensions in the house and restart the router to see if it changes.

    Hope this helps.
