Oh woe is me
Another hard drive has gone to wherever it is that hard drives go when they die.
This one however was in my firewall/router/outgoing proxy server. I noticed lots of disk thrashing going on and couldn’t connect through ssh. Once I hooked up a monitor there were loads of filesystem errors flashing past the console.
I do have a spare disk but it is 160GB which is a bit overkill for a firewall/proxy machine. Temporary measures are in place which explains how you are able to read this. Still and all, now I have something to keep me occupied this afternoon.
Oops! I read this as ‘my firewall/router/outgoing poxy server’!
A poxy server is exactly what it is now Grannymar!
damn. i still think my 750gb drive is going to die, and i would send it back if i had somewhere to put the 400gb of stuff thats on it. but it seems to be doing alright in the little server maybe it dont like vertical mount.
so what you gonna get now instead of the 160gb drive? ssd?
an SSD wouldn’t be much good on account of the all the cache reads and writes. I have an old 8GB disk somewhere. Going to use that instead.
I have now about 11x 40GB drives – still working but I see that ferro structure on them is slowly dying. The oldest one is still in a good condition and was assembled to my IBM NetVista workstation (8 year old hard drive !).
You need to try Spinrite even for maintenance… :]
I swapped it out for a 60GB drive that I forgot I had. So it’s backin action. I have two proxies now again.
One outgoing and one incoming
