Contemplating a change – Any advice?
I’m quite happy with running WordPress on this blog, performance is superb especially with Donncha’s Super Cache plugin. (see the difference that can make here) However recently I have been asked as a favour to host a few sites for friends and acquaintances. In fact I’m already hosting Frob’s site for him and the site of a local business but recently another person asked me if I could register a domain for them (already done) and set up a blog for them (in progress).
Once set up I will look after maintenence etc. while they can just blog away. Naturally WordPress was my initial choice for their blog but after a bit of investigation and testing I’m now considering using MovableType, more for a change than anything else but there does seem to be some significant benefits as Michele at Blacknight can testify having migrated to MovableType a couple of years ago.
The person that the new blog is for is reasonably tech savvy as a user and would have no problems with using either, however would anyone recommend one over the other? It has been some time since Michele migrated to MT so I’m wondering if there is any significant advantage any more in moving away from WordPress? Which would you recommend or indeed what would you recommend?
Have you thought about trying out WPMU?
Hi Richard, actually I didn’t think of WPMU at all. But I don’t think it supports individual domains does it? I could redirect to it I suppose. The only thing is that the other blog will be on a different server to the one that this blog is on.
I actually have him up and running temporarily on WordPress which i just checked a short while ago and he is after doing some serious customisation there already! So it looks like I might just leave him on WordPress. I had hoped to move him before he got too settled in, bit late for that now I think
I’d recommend WordPress, but I would wouldn’t I? Stick with what you know, especially if it’s a business task. You know the system, and can probably fix any problems more readily than with an alternative.
Cheers Donncha,
I already have him up and running on wordpress and he is happy out. I set up his blog on the old Pentium II that I have. WordPress is performing nicely on it but when I tested movable type it was like waiting for paint to dry. his database is on my main server though.
I agree with Donncha. WordPress is the easiest to get up and running faster. I learned that the hard way after two very odd failure in setting up that blog CMS. A very rare moment for me, one that I swear wont happen again.
Also WordPress has a enourmous userbase, with endless amounts of help, resources, information, and addon’s. And whose to say SixApart wont start charging for the software again.
(PS: WP is easier to design for too)
Cheers Sean, The wealth of plugins available for wordpress means that it is pretty much unassailable. Mind you for some reason it used 30 MySQL queries just to display this page.
