The good old days?
Way back in 1992 I spent a week as a recruit in the then FCA (now the Reserve Defence Forces) in Bere Island. One of the most memorable events was how we crossed over to the island itself. The island is served by a couple of ferries that are capable of taking vehicles but given that there was approx. 300 of us we were shuttled over by fishing boats sitting on planks across the deck.
As you can see from the photo below us part time soldiers weren’t the only ones brought over by fishing boat!
In 1994 one of the proper ferries sank with a council truck on board. Searching the net doesn’t seem to bring up much about that sinking but I’m sure that after the sinking the scenario in the photo below is more than likely forbidden!
Click the picture for slightly bigger. Also notice the beer kegs under the planks supporting the weight. Ingenuity at it’s best if not most debatable.

holy shiat those were better times before the EU stuck their nose into everybody’s business. was there a lovely smell of fish on the boat?
It was so long ago that I can’t remember Dan. More than likely though.
What are you doing over in the states??
at the airport on the way back when i wrote that. feck it i should have stayed another few months/ weeks
Months?
Years would be your best be Dan, given how rapidly this place is grinding itself into the ground.
I always let my cousin, one of the ferry owners, drive my rental on board at the west end of the island. And it was a much smaller boat then. No problem. They are fearless.
Thanks for the comment Cáit!
They are certainly fearless alright. I’m promising myself that I will return there next summer. As a civilian this time though.
